History
The story and identity of the High Desert Hockey League.
The High Desert Hockey League was founded in 2024 by Commissioner Jeremy Briscoe and League President Ben Danford with a simple goal: create a fast, fun, and competitive environment that promotes skill and creativity within the traditional men's league—or "beer league"—structure.
The HDHL serves as New Mexico's premier A-level adult hockey league, bringing together players from a wide range of high-level hockey backgrounds. League rosters include current and former college club players, NCAA athletes, Canadian and American Junior A players, former professionals, and local talent with experience in high-level youth and club hockey.
The HDHL is a draft-style league, with rosters changing at the end of each season through the HDHL Entry Draft. The format creates new team identities, balances competition, and gives every season a distinct feel while keeping the league fresh for returning players.
Built on the foundation of its predecessor leagues, the HDHL has become a destination for current junior and college players looking for competitive summer hockey, as well as high-level former players competing during the fall and winter seasons.
At its core, the league is designed around the players: competitive hockey without losing the creativity, camaraderie, and fun that make adult hockey special.

League Rules
Current HDHL game format, standings, shootout, and playoff rules.
Game Format
Games are played using 20-minute run-time periods.
During the final 2:00 of regulation or playoff games, if the score differential is 2 goals or fewer, the clock switches to stop time. If the score differential increases to more than 2 goals, the clock returns to run time.
Penalties
Minor penalties are 3:00 and are served using run time.
If a shorthanded team scores while killing a minor penalty, the opposing team's power play immediately ends and the penalized player is released from the penalty box.
Icing
The HDHL uses hybrid icing, similar to the NHL.
A team that ices the puck 3 consecutive times will be assessed a minor penalty for delay of game.
Regular Season
Win = 2 points; overtime or shootout loss = 1 point; regulation loss = 0 points.

Shootout
Each team selects 3 shooters. Teams alternate attempts with the away team shooting first. If still tied after 3 shooters per team, the shootout continues in sudden-death rounds using matching pairs until one team scores and the other does not in the same round.
Shootout attempts are recorded separately and do not count toward player goals, assists, points, or goalie shots-against/goals-against statistics. The shootout winner receives 1 additional goal in the official game score.
Playoffs
All 4 teams advance to a playoff round robin and each team plays every other team once. The top 2 teams advance to the Championship Game; the remaining 2 teams play in the Third-Place Game.
1st place = 3 points; 2nd place = 2 points; 3rd place = 1 point; 4th place = 0 points entering the playoff round robin.
Regulation win = 3 points; overtime or shootout win = 2 points; overtime or shootout loss = 1 point; regulation loss = 0 points.
